Physical Leveling: Gamer Style

For a long time I've been toying with the idea of trying to create a "game plan" for increasing physical fitness that allows a person to "evel up".  Of course, I'm not a professional trainer . . .and I'm obviously not in shape, YET, myself.  But I keep worrying at the idea, slowly accumulating ideas and information.

I would love to know someone I could consult to work on this more.  And with no money, it's unlikely I will be able to find someone who wants to spend the time working with me.  Although there would be potential for . . .fame, money, notoriety?? . . . for it to be to their benefit.  Ah well, just another thing I keep simmering on the back burner.  If anyone has any ideas, let me know.

I'm really liking LiveStrong. It's easy to use.  The ads are low key.  No one bothers you.  Although I wouldn't mind a few friends.

Why Guinness really is the black stuff. Scientists say stout makes you bitter

The adverts always said Guinness is good for you. But it may be that drinking the black stuff makes you bitter as well as better.

In an intriguing study, scientists have linked tart tastes with an unforgiving  mind.

And the more conservative a person’s views, the more their thoughts are  affected by their tastebuds.

The findings suggest that drinks such as stout, bitter and gin and tonic should be  drunk carefully among friends

WOW!

Today I walked around the center of our complex ten times (around 150 steps per cycle).  TEN TIMES!  Six months ago, when I started this current attempt to lose weight,  I was lucky to get around it once . . and I would hurt for days.   I admit, by round 8 I was pretty tired.  But I had a goal.  And I did it!!  Yay me!

This are moving along

Things are going quite nicely.  The weight is starting to come off steadily.  If you want to track my progress, here is my Livestrong profile.  This morning I thought that I should, belatedly it seems, take some measurements.

bust 53 1/2
under bust 48
waist 48
upper arm 19.5
thigh 29
hips 54

I'm pretty sure my waist was more like 52 a while back.  I'll have to look it up and see.

Why late to bed, early to rise is a recipe for a heart attack

It is the stuff of nightmares for those whose hectic work schedule or busy family life means getting up early and staying up late.

Sleeping for less than six hours a night greatly increases the risk of dying from a heart attack or stroke, a study has found.

Scientists claim that the modern tendency to delay going to bed in order to get through more of the items on the ‘to do’ list has serious health consequences.

Writing Everything Down Sucks!

Actually, the writing down is okay.  It's the totaling.  But today I found a great website with very little advertising.  That was what I disliked about SparkPeople.  Tons of ads.  So now I'm using LiveStrong, sponsored by the Lance Armstrong Foundation.  Easy to use.  No annoying ads, or popups.  So I will be using it instead of my cute food diary.

Here are my totals for today.

Depression: Here's a gene that may make some folks more susceptible

Depression strikes a huge number of Americans at one time or another of their lives -- and studies show that genes are involved in susceptibility to this awful “Black Dog,” as Winston Churchill used to term his struggle with the mood disorder.

But what are the genes involved? A study in the journal Archives of General Psychiatry implicates one. It directs the formation of a small peptide in our brains, Neuropeptide Y.

Neuropeptide Y is found all over the place in our brains, and prior studies had shown that the levels in our bloodstreams and spinal fluid seem to correlate with how resilient we are to life’s stresses: the more NPY, the more resilient.

Happy Imbolc.  I'm feeling the Spring.  All antsy and wanting to organize stuff.  Had an egg today, which totally blew my cholesterol out of the water.  But stuff like that is gonna happen, I guess.

Better today.  I'm quite please.  I was also surprised that an half sandwich and soup had less fat.  I'm guessing the salad would have been better without the dressing but I wasn't in the mood for a naked salad.

Kind of a mixed day.  Felt motivated for part of it, but also had a bit of a manic episode.

The Holidays are OVER!

Thanks to an article in Slate, Kafka's Calisthenics, I started remembering to breathe more again and am starting to stabilize early this year.  As I go through this part of my cycle again, I will be trying to figure out how to keep from losing track of so much.  Although, honestly, I did pretty well.  I even managed to my food journal until about Christmas.  So only about a month of not keeping it this time.  And, I wasn't happy with the one I had made.  It was ugly and did not track all the stuff I wanted to track.  So I designed a new one yesterday.

This isn't a very clear shot, I'll print it later as a pdf.  (Really need to get a usb hub for home.)  I added weekly and daily goals and also space for tracking fats and carbs, which the other one did not have.  And more space for listing food, the old one didn't have enough.

So I'm back on track to keep track of my food again.  I'd say it doesn't really change how I eat much, but I think it will help me identify nutrients I might be missing out on.  I have a list of potassium and calcium rich foods, as I don't seem to get a huge benefit from supplements, as well as list of minimum dailies for a person of the weight I wish to be.

Today I am going to try to work up some sort of "totals" for the day table that I can insert into this blog.  I know no one reads this, but I would like to be able to see changes online.  Probably going to put my "before" pic back up.  Took it down for some reason a few months ago.  Yes, possibly shame.  It was taken when I was over 320 pounds and . . it ain't pretty.

I'm also working on a very comprehensive calorie counter book.  Found a text only database of foods with calories, fat, pro, etc and made it almost spreadsheet ready, just going through and tweaking some places where "find and replace" failed.  As soon as I sort out how to print it nicely, I'll offer it for download.  It's got a LOT of foods.  That is where I run into trouble food journaling, as I hate to look everything up at some of the food/diet sites.  There's good ones.  But it gets sooooo tiresome.

This morning I found an old . . .notebook . . it's sort of a cross between just a notebook I carried around to plan menus and shopping lists and a diary.  It's from 2001.  The first entry, if only I would remember what I learn, was in July, less than 2 weeks before I agreed to marry Mike.  I was having doubts.  I wanted to wait and sort out the Michie thing.  And then ten days later he found out he had gotten the job in CA and in the excitement I forgot my own wisdom.  I let myself get caught up because I had a limited time to choose.  Ah well, who's to say it would have turned out better if I had stayed in CO . . would probably never had a tv show for half a decade.  Although I'm so lonely it doesn't really matter a lot of the time.

Okay, that way lies crawling back in bed and crying.  Need to do some research and then off to work.

Improving Body Image.

The Top 5 Things You Can Do Now to Promote Positive Body Image

  1. Choose one friend or family member and discuss one thing you like about yourselves.
  2. Keep a journal of all the good things your body allows you to do (e.g., sleep well and wake up rested, play tennis, etc.).
  3. Pick one friend to make a pact with to avoid negative body talk. When you catch your friend talking negatively about their body, remind them of the pact.
  4. Make a pledge to end complaints about your body, such as “I’m so flat-chested” or “I hate my legs.” When you catch yourself doing this, make a correction by saying something positive about that body part, such as, “I’m so glad my legs got me through soccer practice today”.
  5. The next time someone gives you a compliment, rather than objecting (“No, I’m so fat”), practice taking a deep breath and saying “thank you.”

Yale University researchers find key genetic trigger of depression

Yale University researchers have found a gene that seems to be a key contributor to the onset of depression and is a promising target for a new class of antidepressants, they report Oct. 17 in the journal Nature Medicine.

"This could be a primary cause, or at least a major contributing factor, to the signaling abnormalities that lead to depression," said Ronald S. Duman, professor of psychiatry and pharmacology at Yale and senior author of the study.

This is pretty big news.  I am hoping they find better ways to deal with depression soon.

Totally Losing My Motivation

Yes, I know what I'm about to say is silly.  But recent changes in the online game I play has left me disinclined to continue to play.  Which is really bad.  I credit this game with keeping me engaged and at least semi interested in life during several very deep depressions.  A lot of my spare time is spent either playing this game or learning more about this game, which keeps me from obsessing about things that make me feel bad.  I am having to struggle really hard just to keep up the minimum interest in life at all.
